How Does A Poker Tournament Work?
Two Ways to Play: Choose Your Tournament
Last Man Standing – The classic format. Blinds rise at set intervals, and as players get knocked out, tables get reshuffled to keep things even. Play continues until just 8 players remain, at which point they all move to one final table and battle it out until a single champion is left standing.
Elimination Rounds – Perfect if your event has a hard end time. This format runs in two clean 1-hour rounds. In Round 1, blinds climb steadily until time’s up, then the top 2 chip leaders at each table advance to the final round, while everyone else is out. All 8 finalists start Round 2 fresh, with new chips and reset blinds. When the clock runs out, whoever’s holding the most chips takes the win (with 2nd and 3rd place close behind).
Charity Poker Tournaments
Want to Play for Real Money? There’s a License for That.
Since 2007, charities and community groups have been able to legally hold Texas Hold’em poker tournaments where players buy in with real money and play for real prizes. Perfect for raising funds for a sports team’s new equipment, a school’s computer lab, or any cause you’re rallying behind.
Of course, there are a few rules that come with that license. Here’s what you need to know:
- Maximum 100 players & Maximum $100 buy-in (No Rebuys)
- Maximum total of $10,000 per event (100 players @ $100 each)
- Maximum 25% of total for use on expenses (venue, services, marketing, etc…)
- Maximum prize pool of $2,000 (any one prize maximum of $1,000)
